Unique IDAG-0131DescriptionThe Hackney Carriages Committee was responsible for licensing of hackney carriages and other public vehicles operating in the City. However, CA 113, By-Laws Committee was responsible for the by-laws that controlled hackney carriages.
The Committee inspected the carriages, and "examined and approved the certificates of character and competency to drive" submitted to them by prospective drivers. They then submitted the names of applicants to Council for approval.
This Committee was a standing committee of Council until the end of 1853. In 1854 Council was replaced by Commissioners and there was no committee structure in Council. When a new Council was elected in 1858, the Hackney Carriages Committee was not re-appointed. Its duties appear to have been taken over by CA 113, By-Laws Committee.CreationResolution of Council 18 November 1847AbolitionCessation of records at the end of 1853
