Control of vehicular traffic (public and private) and pedestrian movements on streets and public places, and of car parking including provision of parking stations. The power to make by-laws for the regulation and government of carters porters and drivers.

Council given authority to make by-laws to regulate traffic, porters and barrow-men, the pace of horses and vehicles, driving of cattle in the City. This authority was re-stated in the Sydney Corporation Acts 1902 (s200 (h-i)) and 1932 (s263 (h-i)).
The Local Government Act 1919 (applied to the Council from 1949) deals with traffic matters in Part IX division 8. References in it to the Metropolitan Traffic Act 1900 remain to be checked.
For municipalities other than the City of Sydney (before 1949): Municipalities Act 1867. Refer to the function CF 29 for details.
Council's current responsibilities (such as for on-street and off-street vehicle parking) under the Local Government Act 1993 and Roads Act 1993, require further investigation.AbolitionPublic Vehicles Act 1873
