Unique IDAG-0165DescriptionIn a report to the Town Clerk dated 3 December 1982, the Director of City Health & Community Services observed that the Council had been involved with the problems of homelessness over a number of years, and that such problems were becoming more significant. The Director recommended that a Homeless Persons Information Centre be established on a one-year trial basis, subject to funding from the Commonwealth and
State Governments. Council approved the recommendation on 20 December 1982.
The functions of the Centre would be to (a) co-ordinate the placement of homeless persons in available hostel accommodation, and (b) to act as a referral service for homeless persons to social service agencies. Problems of costs and facilities were considered too great to permit the establishment of a Centre which could offer more direct assistance to the homeless.
Funding to subsidise the operation of the Centre was forthcoming from the Commonwealth but not from the State Government, and the Centre was approved to commence operating for the trial period, by resolution of Council on 5 December 1983.
The centre operated at first from premises at the Community Centre at 68 Oxford St, and relocated to the Manning Building, 449 Pitt St in mid 1984. By February 1995 the Centre was operating from Town Hall House.
Council resolved on 11 June 1985 that the Centre should continue to operate, as a worthwhile community service.
In March 2014 it was announced the HPIC would cease operations on 30 June 2014, following an announcement by the NSW State Government that a state wide referral service would be introduced.
