Unique IDAG-0167DescriptionIn 1915 the Commonwealth Department of Defence recommended that a Military Hospitals Advisory Committee be set up in each state.
The committees were empowered to "inspect the military hospitals and convalescent homes; to report on matters connected with their business management, and to inquire into any complaints that may arise in connection with the treatment of patients. The Committee will also advise on matters relative to the reception in each state of wounded soldiers from overseas, their transport and distribution".
In each state the committee was constituted to include two members representing the Federal War Committee for that state, the Lord Mayor or Mayor of the Capital City, two nominees of the Red Cross (Ladies), one nominee from the Chamber of Commerce, and one nominee of the Trades and Labour Council.
The Military Hospitals Advisory Committee for NSW was based in the Town Hall in Sydney. The Lord Mayor was Chairman, and the Town Clerk acted as Honorary Secretary. Other members included J H Catts (MHR), Joseph Cook, George Parkes (President of the Chamber of Commerce), Senator E D Miller, R R Richards (former Lord Mayor), and T S Crawford (MLA).
It was responsible for the Australian General Hospital in Randwick; the Garrison Hospital in Victoria Barracks; the Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Broughton Hall, Leichhardt; the Australian Auxiliary Hospital, George's Heights; VD Milsons Island; and Camp Clearing in Liverpool.
The Committee reported directly to the Minister for Defence. The business of the Committee seems to have wound up in 1918 at the end of the War.CreationInstruction from Commonwealth Minister of Defence 6 November 1915
