Information technology management
Unique IDAY-0069DescriptionManagement of computer and information technology services, including hardware and software, network arrangements, database administration and the Internet.
The City of Sydney has had a computer system since 1970 with the appointment of a data processing manager. The design and implementation of an information system for the City Planning Department began in 1972, with valuation and rates computerised in 1974. A purpose built room to hold Council’s mainframe computer was included in the construction of Town Hall House in 1977. In 1980 the Council installed a computerised data management system which allowed for ‘information to be made available immediately through visual display units situated at display counters and in the various Council Departments’ (City of Sydney Strategic Plan 1980: 27-30). A new Information Systems Department was created in late 1984. Personal computers were gradually introduced to the organisation in the early 1990s. A fully networked desktop computing environment and ad-hoc Help Desk Service were introduced by the mid 1990’s, with a more formal Help Desk Service established in 1997. The web site www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au launched in 1998. In 2000 the ITIL framework was adopted, followed by the development of a standard operating environment (SOE) for the desktop fleet. In 2010 IT Support Services underwent a restructure to align support services with the needs of the business and to ensure quality service delivery to the organisation.
