While the committee started on 09/01/1843, surviving minutes are from 1846. All items have been listed and contain a list of the significant subjects (but not all subjects) covered for each volume. DescriptionThis series contains the minutes of the Finance Committee I (AG-0124) for the period 21/11/1846 to 10/12/1973, appointed to "consider and control all matters connected with Corporation expenditure and payments and perform all such duties as relating to finance as the Council may from time to time require". (Minutes of Council 9 Jan 1843). This committee existed until 1982.

By 1899 the scope of the committee was widened to include the following: examination of all vouchers for payment of wages and accounts due by the Corporation; collection of revenue from rates, dues, licenses, rents and all other sources; conduct of all legal proceedings in which the Council is concerned; management and letting of market buildings, shops and stalls, wharves, and other properties of the corporation; management of the cattle sale yards, and the issue of stock and other licenses; the management of all matters affecting the finance of the corporation; and all other matters not specifically set down for the Works Committee (page 24, Proceedings of Council, 28 February 1899).

The minutes from 1846 to 1922 are handwritten (Vol 1-28), and from 1923 onwards are typescript (Vol 29-53). Except for the first, all the minutes are indexed. It is not known what happened to the minutes of the Finance Committee from 09/01/1843 until 21/11/1846.

There is a gap between 1854 and 1857 that corresponds to the dissolution of the Council and the installation of City Commissioners.

The Finance Committee approved officers' salaries each year, so these meetings contain a list of the officers' names, positions and salaries. From volume 19 there are references to file numbers from Town Clerk's Correspondence Folders (AS-0028), Town Clerk's Correspondence Files (AS-0034) and Central Activity Files (AS-0116).
