Sydney City Council (through the Lord Mayor) was associated with the bid team that won the Olympic Games for Sydney in 2000 and the Council is nominally the host city. The Council's Corporate Plan 1996-99 gives priority to preparing the City for this event.

The Lord Mayor is a member of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG).

The games opened on 15 September and closed on 1 October 2000.
