Council also received a computer tape of the valuation. This series was kept by the City Treasury Department I (AG-0012).

The valuations are used by Council to establish the rating-base factor (RBF) for each property by which the rate is determined. Valuer-General’s revalues all properties approximately every three years. In the intervals between, supplementary lists of valuations and individual valuations are supplied by Valuer-General's to Council.

Each year as a prelude to levying the rates, the Rates Section compares the values of properties in Council's records (computer files) to those in the Valuer-General's Books (and supplementary lists) to identify discrepancies. Rates are levied only on those properties where the values in the two records match. Cases of discrepancies are investigated as on on-going process till the value is established and rates can be levied. The Valuer-General's Books and supplementary lists are therefore a primary reference tool for the main activity of the section. They are kept as the ‘clean copy’ and not annotated.

The entries are listed in valuation number (same as second element of Council's assessment number) order, which follows street number order. For each entry, the following information is given:
-valuation number
-name and address of owner
-number of house and suburb
-date of valuation
-area and dimensions of property
-land value and rating base factor, and
other coded information.

The printout is headed ‘VGJNPRNT; Valuer-General's Department, NSW; Valuation District 208 - Sydney, date and page number’. Below is the general heading ‘General Valuation Journal’.

Before 1949 Council undertook the valuation of properties within its boundaries. From 1949, the State Government Department of the Valuer-General undertook the valuation and forwarded valuation lists to Council on a regular basis. See Valuation Lists (AS-0031). From 1968 the recording of valuations was computerised and Council's copy took the form of computer printout (AS-0032).
