The valuation (= assessment) of individual rateable properties, for the purpose of gathering information necessary to determine the amount of rates to be paid and who should pay them.
The City of Sydney conducted its own assessments and valuations (using Council staff or contractors) until 1950. Since then it has relied on valuations made by the NSW Valuer-General.
