The series is controlled by the Contracts Register and Index (AS-0751) in the period c. 01/01/1942 to c. 31/12/1973.

The series was created by the:
- Administration Department (AG-0003) in the period 29/06/1970 to 14/09/1976, and
- Town Clerk’s Department (AG-0040) in the period 03/1/1843 to 29/06/1970.

The contracts cover all aspects of Council's activities, from punting refuse to sea, to building the Sydney Town Hall. The majority of contracts relate to street works, supply of stores, water and sewerage works, building and maintenance of Council buildings including the Town Hall, the Queen Victoria Building, substations, power stations, conveniences, urinals and swimming pools; bonds paid by Council officers, lease of property, street cleaning and garbage collection.

The contracts include the name of the successful contractor, the date, works or service to be supplied, cost, and signature of the parties. Some of the contracts include plans and correspondence.

The first sequence of contracts was allocated a single running number by the Archives. The second sequence has an annual single number.
