Register of Letters of Introduction

For each register entry, information recorded is the date of issue of the letter, the annual number of the letter (and the file number on which a copy was placed), the name of the applicant/recipient, and the title or name of the person recommending the applicant.

The index is alphabetical by surnames of recipients of the letters, then chronological by dates of the letters. The cross reference is by year of issue and annual number of the letter.

Loose inside the second volume is a plastic folder containing some correspondence 1977-1984, some models for letters of introduction, and a supplementary page relating to the issue of letters 1990-1991.

Letters of introduction were issued on request over the signature of the Lord Mayor, to citizens of Sydney travelling abroad. The usual procedure was for an applicant to write requesting such a letter, giving personal details and enclosing a reference from a suitable third party. In most cases the applicants were ordinary travellers, not on any kind of official business. The practice of issuing letters of introduction ceased in 1993.
