Unique IDAG-0030DescriptionThis agency was created as part of the administrative reorganisation of the Council recommended by the Commissioners installed by the State Government in 1987-1988, and which took effect from 1 January 1989. The new agency inherited its responsibilities from the abolished Civic and Public Affairs Department.
The agency was responsible for -
Provision of support services to the Lord Mayor, including speechwriters, and the organisation and staffing of official receptions and similar events. This responsibility was gradually assumed by the Office of the Lord Mayor as it developed from late 1991.
Provision of support services to the Town Clerk and Aldermen.
Organisation of ceremonial and civic occasions hosted by the Council, and liaison for those organised outside the Council (such as naturalisation ceremonies presided over by the Lord Mayor), and including Council's Sister City relationships and programs of community entertainment.
A general responsibility for public relations and promotion of the City Council and the City.
The agency played a major role in organisation of the program to celebrate the Sesquicentenary of the Council in 1992.
In July 1991 this agency was brought into the Corporate & Community Services Division, one of four newly created divisions to coordinate Councils administrative responsibilities. These divisions, not creating records themselves, are not recognised by the Archives CRS documentation system. At the same time the use of the suffix 'Department' was dropped from Council usage.
In December 1992 Council adopted a consultant's report recommending a new administrative structure, including the replacement of the four divisions by five new ones (which the CRS system does recognise). The new Cultural & Community Services Division absorbed those responsibilities of the Civic Affairs [Department] which were not assumed by the Offices of the Lord Mayor and General Manager respectively.CreationNSW Gazette, 2 December 1988: Notice pursuant to City of Sydney Act 1988, Schedule 3, Clauses 4, 7AbolitionResolution of Council 21 December 1992
