Unique IDAG-0009DescriptionThe Civic and Public Affairs Department was established when the Civic Affairs branch of CA 10, Parks and Recreations Department, was separated to become a department in its own right.

The new department consolidated the public relations and civic ceremonial responsibilities centred on the Town Hall (including maintenance, letting of the Town Hall and the protocol function), and linked them to the responsibility of information and secretarial services for the aldermen.

A Public Affairs Unit was established to increase communication between the Council and city residents by publicising its decisions. The Unit took over responsibility for public relations generally, and in this capacity produced the Annual Reports for 1983 to 1985. Subsequently that task passed to the Policy and Research Branch of CA 4, Information Systems.

The department coordinated the Sydney District Business association and the Sister City relationships with San Francisco, Wellington, Nagoya, and Portsmouth. It was responsible for use of Sydney Square and letting of the Town Hall House restaurant. Its first Director was Ron Stringer (who had been Controller of CA 10, Parks and Recreations). He was succeeded by John Randall who was appointed Director on 5 May 1987.

Commissioners who had replaced Council were empowered under the City of Sydney Act 1988 to draft organisational structures for the two councils (City of South Sydney and City of Sydney) constituted under the Act. The new structures were gazetted as Schedule 3 of the Act on 2 December 1988, to take effect on the 1 January 1989.

Under the new structures, the Civic and Public Affairs Department was abolished and replaced by CA 30, Civic Affairs. The function of media relations went to CA 4, Information Systems, and letting and maintenance of the Town Hall went to CA 11, Properties II.
