City Surveyor's Department Letter Books, 1888-1923
Description
Unique IDAS-0690DateBetween 1st January 1888 and 1st January 1923Date qualifiercircaFormatVolume - Leather BoundDescriptionThis series contains books of press-copy letters written by surveyors and clerks in the City Surveyor's Drawing Office. The first few volumes contain mostly internal correspondence, including copies of reports submitted, notifications of staff on sick leave, orders for supplies, and reports on work completed in the section. The later volumes include copies of external letters written to outside people and firms.
The Letter Books were written during a period when the City Surveyor was responsible not only for the normal surveying functions, but also for inspection of buildings and the night soil service. The letters deal with some of the following subjects: street repairs, building and surveying, encroachments, provision of lamps for streets, alignments, complaints from rate payers, sewers, preparation of plans and specifications, kerbs and gutters, returns for the Moore Park and Pyrmont Destructors, employment of carters, street lighting and street name changes. There is a subject index at the front of each volume.
In the 1970's, the records of defunct councils that were amalgamated with the Sydney City Council in 1949, were transferred to the custody of the Mitchell Library from Council due to lack of space. In 1992 these records were transferred back to Council's custody, including this series of letter books. It is not clear how they came to be transferred to the Mitchell Library in the first place, as they were Sydney City Council records, not those of a defunct council.
