Some of the volumes also contain related correspondence, programs, and entree cards. It is not clear when the volumes were started, but it is likely it was around 1934 because of the major events that took place with the Royal Visit of that year, and it is from around this period that the collection of cards begins to become more complete.
The cards include invitations to fancy dress balls in 1879, the opening of the Centennial Hall and the Queen Victoria Building, Federation Celebrations, the opening of the Domain Baths, naming and opening of various community centres, the Waratah Festivals, unveiling of monuments statues and fountains, and the opening of Town Hall House.
The Christmas cards date from 1913 to 1915, and from 1931 to 1992. They are not signed but are dated. In the back part of the first volume, Christmas cards from other cities and visiting ships addressed to the Lord Mayor have been pasted. The volumes also contain menus from various Christmas functions and some official invitations.
This record series is 'live' and continues to be added to by the Protocol Unit in the Office of the Lord Mayor.

Volume 1: Invitation Cards from 1879, 1888-1889, 1897-1898, 1901-1911, 1913, 1915, 1917, 1919-1920, 1922, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929-1946. This includes programs for fancy dress balls given in 1879, invitation from the Mayor of Melbourne to the opening of the Centennial International Exhibition, invitation cards and program for the opening of the Centennial Hall in 1889, the opening of the Queen Victoria Building in 1898, Commonwealth Federation Celebrations in 1901, Empire Day Celebrations, opening of the Domain Baths in 1908, visit of the Prince of Wales in 1920, completion of the Harbour Bridge in 1932, visit of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1934, Coronation Celebrations in 1937, and the 150th Anniversary Celebrations in 1938.
Volume 2: Invitation Cards from 3 February 1947 to 24 February 1958. Includes invitations to meet Helen Keller, Sir Laurence and Lady Olivier, the laying of the memorial tablet at the E S Marks Athletic Field Moore Park, Commonwealth of Australia Jubilee Celebrations, official opening of the Frank Green Library at Paddington in 1952, Royal Visit in 1954, opening of the Ladies Rest Centre in Hyde Park in 1954, the Elizabeth Healey Rest Area in Ultimo in 1954, the Victoria Park Swimming Pool in 1954, the Esme Hackett Memorial Hall in 1955, the Anthony Doherty Centre in 1956, the Centenary of Responsible Government in NSW in 1956, the opening of the Kent Street Car Park in 1956, Glebe Branch of the Library in 1956, Maternal and Infant Welfare Centre in Paddington in 1956, opening of the Joseph Sargeant Children’s Centre in Erskineville in 1956, launch of public appeal for Sydney Opera House funds in 1957, Waratah Spring Festivals, Esme Hackett Memorial Hall extension in 1957, Welfare Centre No 1 in Redfern in 1957, and the Reg Cope Grandstand in February 1958.
