The intersection in the background, with the grocers shop on the corner, is Abercrombie Street. Boys are playing on builders trestles on the road. Smithers Street (Paradise Row until 1875) was a notorious slum, originally owned by Thomas Broughton, mayor of Sydney in 1846.
