The work includes gardens and landscaping in accordance with the scheme indicated on Drawing P237/W12, accompanying the report of the Director of Parks, dated 6th February 1967. For this work the Hague Smith Fountain (John Christie Wright Fountain) is to be relocated. The Australian Gas Light Company provides and installs three gas lamps in Macquarie Place Park as a gift to the City which is to be recognised by fixing a plaque to one of the light standards.
It is reported that the catalyst for this remodelling was a collision between two motor vehicles at the intersection of Bridge and Loftus Streets on the 2nd November 1964, in which one vehicle mounted the footpath and severely damaged the stone balustrading surrounding the obelisk. A proposal was made to remedy this with remodelling the area around the obelisk, re-laying the path between it and Macquarie Place Park, as well as a new entrance and pathway from Bridge Street, a new water service and plantings. The National Trust of Australia and the Government Architect of New South Wales were advised of the project. The domed roof of over the men's convenience is to be remodelled and retained.
Includes coloured plan of Proposed Remodelling for Macquarie Street Place Park, corner of Bridge and Loftus, No. P237/W11 from the Council's Parks and Recreations Department. The plan has two sections added that lift up and show before (page 89) and after (page 87) elements of the changes. The plan documents the John Christie Wright Fountain, the Obelisk, H.M.S. Sirius Anchor and Cannon. The file mentions P237/112 but this is not included.
