James Dale, turncock, was first on the scene and opened the sluices at the tunnel and shut off the water from the lower levels. Carroll directed the attention of No. 2 Fire Company and they commenced working. G. Marlar appeared, assessed what had already been done and endeavoured to get a supply of water for the remaining 3 engines, but 2 proved defective. Torning's Engine commenced from the Pitt Street Main but had a poor supply. Mr Clayton sent for the Inspector who directed Torning to a better supply at George Street.
