(Note: Engineer to report: JW. This drain was not damaged or touched - or seen I am informed - by the Corporation people - when the rainfall in 1864 (April) was so heavy that a torrent passed through Yurong Lane and washed it away so that it was dangerous to the public - Mr Kosten's and all other private drains then in the lane was washed away with it - The Corporation [when -- in April 1865 -- it filled up the lane to make it safe] laid a pipe drain through it, and left junctions for all the houses to make connections and gave them notice of the fact- If Mr Kosten had a drain or was suffering loss for want of one he should have made it and connected 13 months since: EB;1/6/65.
