Henry Graham, City Health Officer, Quarterly Report of the Sanitary condition of the City. The number of deaths recorded were 124 deaths in March, 120 in April, and 125 in May. There is a table which sets out cause of death (zymotic diseases, constitutional diseases, local diseases, developmental diseases, violent deaths, causes not specified) against age under 5 years and over 5 years. "Fevers of a typhoid type have been very fatal; also local diseases, of the nerves and respiratory systems, and organs of circulation, have bourne a large proportion." ... "During the same period, there has been much distress and want among the working class. These causes reduce the standard of health and strength and leave the opening to fevers and those local diseases indicative of dearness of provisions and want of employment." The public charitable institutions in Sydney (the Hospital, Asylum for aged and infirm and Benevolent Asylum for unfortunate deserted women and children) are always full. He gives an example of a deserted family of a severely ill woman with six children living in a garret in a court off Sussex Street. He warns that precautionary measures are needed to prevent a cholera epidemic; describes how cesspools are inadequate; the pits of the Sydney Common are a complete failure; how sewers are an improvement; the "Public Health Bill" now being introduced by the Victorian Goverment; recommends the adoption of the use of earth closets in areas unsewered, and recommends papers recently published by his friend Dr Bedford.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
