Requested by Mayor to report on safety of store. Danger exists as part isused as blacksmithing workshop, seperated by a timber partition, a great fire risk and great quantity of oils stored close by. In event of fire, have to leave my post to extinguish it, and the phone is not connected with exchange or fire station. W Leigh to CIty Surv, in answer to nightwatchman report: no main water connected to store, only a ¾" pipe from Randwick Rd to 400gallon tank for blacksmith shop; in store and carpenters, no water supply only 3 gall buckets. Evening cleanup and store damped down. No direct communication with exchange, only to Belmore depot from 4pm to 9am. If nightwatchman leaves, to hoard a dangerous hole, reported by police, or light hoarding lamps from absence of lamplighters, these seldom occur. Notes: RWR: Mayor already ordered that this and other depots be connected directly with telephone exchange. A fire outbreak may be difficult to arrest, Mayor may consider a provisional water supply.
