The Rocks / Tallowoladah
This collection includes selected items relating to The Rocks.
The Rocks is the area on the western side of Sydney Cove. It was named The Rocks by the convicts who lived there from 1788 due to the rocky outcrops of sandstone.
At the foot of The Rocks on what is now George Street was the first hospital. The area contained public and private wharves and the homes and storehouses of traders. It was also associated with seafaring and maritime activities.
The Rocks became a working-class area, and immigrants. The first epidemic of bubonic plague broke out there in 1900 and over the next 20 years hundreds of houses were demolished. More homes were demolished to make way for the Sydney Harbour Bridge approach in the 1920s and 1930s and the Cahill Expressway in the 1960s.
In 1970 The Rocks came under the control of the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority.
