Bridge Street
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to Bridge Street.
Bridge Street is located at the northern end of the central business district (CBD) of Sydney. The street runs west to east, with traffic flowing in both directions, and crosses at Pitt Street and Phillip Street.
It is one of Sydney’s earliest streets and began as a path from the Governor’s House (now the corner of Bridge and Phillip Street) to the military barracks. It was named because of a small, log bridge located near the intersection of Pitt Street. The bridge crossed the Tank Stream during the early days of the colony.
A number of significant buildings and sites are located on Bridge Street including Burns Philp & Co. Ltd, Anchor House, Cliveden (formerly the Birts building), the former Northumberland Insurance building, Singapore Airlines House, The Royal Exchange, Lands Department building, Education Department building, Booth House and Macquarie Place.
