South Sydney Municipal Council Health and Building Department
Unique IDAG-0018DescriptionIn March 1981 the Municipal Health Surveyor's Department was renamed the Health and Building Department and given the additional functions of building inspection and building approvals. The new department comprised eighteen officers in three branches.
The department, headed by the Chief Health and Building Surveyor, had three branches as follows. The first branch, headed by a Senior Building Surveyor included an assistant building surveyor, three health and building surveyors and one trainee health and building surveyor. The second branch comprised one officer, the Health Education Officer, whilst the third branch comprised the Prosecuting Officer, three Health and Building Surveyors, two patrol officers, two pest controllers and one dog controller.
The function of building approval was transferred to the Health Department as a result of an investigation by the Administrative Officer, Patrick McRae, into the measures to be taken to improve the operation of the Planning and Building Department, ordered by Resolution of Council of 25 February 1981. On 11 March 1981 Council resolved to amalgamate forward and current planning and development into one department under Brian Holland as Chief Town Planner and to dismember the Planning and Building Department and amalgamate the building responsibilities with the Health Department under the Chief Health and Building Surveyor, J D Smith.
From 1 January 1982, with the amalgamation of South Sydney Municipal Council with Sydney City Council, the functions of the Health and Building Department were transferred to CA 6, City Health and Community Services Department, for public health and allied functions, and CA 8, City Planning Department, with patrol officers going to CA 1, Cleansing Department.CreationResolution of Council (?)AbolitionLocal Government (City of Sydney Boundaries) Act, 1981
