This Committee was responsible for lighting the City through the laying of gas mains and the erection of gas lamps. DescriptionThe volumes in this series were the official signed minutes of the Lighting Committee (AG-0115) for the period 18/06/1857 to 15/09/1989. This committee was one of the first appointed by Council in 1842 and was responsible for lighting the City through the laying of gas mains and the erection of gas lamps.

The Committee does not appear to have kept minutes as such from 1842 to 1853 but presented numerous reports to Council that are contained in Committee Reports (AS-0021).

From 1854 to 1856 Council was replaced by commissioners who carried on the work of the committees. The Lighting Committee was re-appointed on 22 April 1857 and appears to have kept minutes from its first meeting on 18 June 1857.

The last meeting of the committee seems to have been on 15 September 1898. It was probably wound down because the Council had started looking into the feasibility of lighting the City by electricity rather than gas.

The first two volumes of minutes, from 1857 to June 1865 were not indexed. The last two volumes, from July 1865 to 1898 were indexed at the front of the volumes.

The minutes recorded matters such as the laying of gas mains and the erection (and occasionally the repositioning or removal) of gas lamps in various streets and parks in the City. The actual work of laying the gas mains and erecting the gas lamps was carried out by the Australian Gas Light Company which was formed in 1836 and first lit the streets in 1841.

Most of the committee's time was taken up with recommending sites for erection of new lamps in the City. The City Engineer, and from 1860, the City Surveyor, were called upon to report on the number of lamps required and whether the lamps were needed at all.

In the early years the Gas Light Company sometimes reported that lamps that had been ordered could not be erected because certain streets had not yet been formed. By 1880 the number of lamps being ordered to be erected at each meeting had greatly increased.
