Unique IDAG-0119DescriptionThis Committee succeeded the Board of Works Committee in November 1844. It consisted of the City Surveyor and five Councillors. It was responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of the City streets and surface drains. From about 1853 the Committee also seems to have acquired the responsibilities of AGY 126, Board of Health.
From 1885 to 1891, the Committee met only four times, 20 November 1885, 16 September 1886, 25 August 1887, and 7 May 1891. The date of this last meeting has been taken as the date of cessation.
During the 1890's, until 1898, Council appears to have had only two Committees, Finance and Lighting. The Finance Committee had a number of sub-committees that performed the function of the CA 119, Improvement Committee. For example, there was a Specifications and Tenders Sub-Committee appointed on 24 November 1891, and a Paving Sub-Committee, appointed 17 December 1891.
In 1898, Council decided that the work "could be better controlled by a system of small Committees". It appointed two standing committees, CA 124, Finance and CA 48, Works Committee I.CreationResolution of Council November 1844AbolitionCeased meeting after 7 May 1891
