Improvement Committee
Unique IDAG-0119DescriptionThis Committee succeeded the Board of Works Committee in November 1844. It consisted of the City Surveyor and five Councillors. It was responsible for the construction, maintenance and repair of the City streets and surface drains. From about 1853 the Committee also seems to have acquired the responsibilities of AGY 126, Board of Health.
From 1885 to 1891, the Committee met only four times, 20 November 1885, 16 September 1886, 25 August 1887, and 7 May 1891. The date of this last meeting has been taken as the date of cessation.
During the 1890's, until 1898, Council appears to have had only two Committees, Finance and Lighting. The Finance Committee had a number of sub-committees that performed the function of the CA 119, Improvement Committee. For example, there was a Specifications and Tenders Sub-Committee appointed on 24 November 1891, and a Paving Sub-Committee, appointed 17 December 1891.
In 1898, Council decided that the work "could be better controlled by a system of small Committees". It appointed two standing committees, CA 124, Finance and CA 48, Works Committee I.CreationResolution of Council November 1844AbolitionCeased meeting after 7 May 1891

Archivist noteNote by Mariyn Mason as she commenced document-level re-listing work on CRS 23/01:
Re vol 23/1. There are no folio numbers or pagination in volume 23/1 which contains papers from Oct 1843 to Dec 1846. There is no index to 23/1. Most items are memos, petitions or letters. There are very few formal reports. The first item is dated Oct 1843. The second item was created 6 December 1844 and the remaining items were created during 1845 and 1846 although they may refer to earlier matters or to future expenditure or proposed works. Final items are dated December 1846. I have created "archival folio numbers" using square brackets for 23/1 eg 23/1/[1] with pencil annotation on the page. I have decided - subject of course to your direction - to use the intro "Report of the Improvement Committee" for each matter referred to it whether or not there is an actual report. Items are occasionally out of chronological order. The Minute Book 10/ 1 of the Committee ends at Oct 9, 1846 and 10/ 2 starts at Dec 1847. 10/1 starts with a resume of the Committees created prior to the Improvement Committee: Committe for employment of men, 21 July 1843, re-named Board of Works 26 Aug 1843, then minutes of meetings from 28 Aug 1843 onward. Re-named Improvement Committee 20 Nov 1844.
