Streets engineering

For Councils other than Sydney City Council, absorbed by the City by 1949, see function FUN 29 for details.
The maintenance and repair of streets, including: opening new streets, implementing splays and footpath upgrading schemes, extending and closing existing streets.
This responsibility has been shared with the Colonial / State government authorities under different arrangements over the years. This needs more research. At present, the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) has control over some 'main roads' in the Council's area.
Management of traffic is a separate function, CF 18.CreationSydney Corporation Act 1842 ss 80, 82.
Council empowered to keep streets in repair, and to extend and open streets with the approval of the Governor-in-Council.
Sydney Corporation Act 1879, Part V (ss 67-102).
All public ways vested in the Council, which was given authority to alter, widen, level, construct, divert etc etc, subject to certain activities being approved by the Governor.
For municipalities other than the City of Sydney (until 1949): Municipalities Act 1858 s73 (public roads under control of the Council). Refer to the function CF 29.
Local Government Act 1919 (applied to the City Council from 1949): Part IX (Public Roads)
