The official signed copies of contracts are in CRS 65, Contracts, 1843-1976.

It appears that the volumes in this series were retrospectively bound from bundles of contracts held in the City Surveyor's office. The early contracts in this series are annotated to show which bundles they came from, and up to 1915, only a selection of the contracts were bound. It is possible that those contracts considered less important were left out and later destroyed.

The volumes are not indexed, but the front of each volume contains a list showing the contract number, what the contract was for, and its page number. The volumes contain a specification for the job and a copy of the contract to be signed. Sometimes a linen plan, blueprint or coloured plan is included. The later contracts often contain copies of related correspondence, and especially after 1929, references to files in CRS 34, Town Clerk's Correspondence files, CRS 144, City Engineer's Department Correspondence Files, and notes to show when the project was completed and the cost.

The first volume is labelled 1868 to 1890, but there is only one contract for 1868, and none for 1869 to 1879.

Most of the contracts were for roadworks and other activities associated with the work of the City Surveyor's Department. This includes: kerbing and guttering; forming and reforming of roads; construction and maintenance of urinals, water troughs and fountains; painting; construction of steps, fences and retaining walls; supply and delivery of water carts, trachyte cube setts, woodpaving, woodblocks, blue metal, bins, motor wagons, motor lorries, motor cars, concrete mixers, tractors; erection of sale yards at Flemington; the right of advertising on sheep sheds etc at Flemington; construction of weighbridges; supply of street name signs; erection of a gatekeeper's lodge at St John's College, Parramatta Road Camperdown; repairs to the Moore Park Destructor; purchase and removal of iron railings around Hyde Park; punting of refuse to the sea; construction of tennis courts; collection and disposal of night soil; the purchase, demolition and removal of 2 Wylde Street, known as "Crecy"; street decorations for the Royal Visit in 1954; and construction of various plants at the Wattle Street Depot.

The contracts for supply of vehicles and plant often include coloured manufacturers' catalogues.
