City Building Surveyor's Department Card Files, 1949-1983

Unique IDAS-0979DateBetween 1st January 1949 and 1st January 1983Date qualifiercircaFormatCardDescriptionThis series contains groups of cards created by staff of the City Building Surveyor's Department to keep track of various works and projects, in particular the progress of: development and building applications submitted to the Council, parks, splays and road widenings.

One of the main purposes for keeping the cards was to allow the Department to update the City Building Surveyor's Detail Sheets (CRS 801).

The first group of cards are for buildings completed in the Sydney City area, and in the outer city area. The outer city area are those suburbs amalgamated with the City in 1949 - Paddington, Enmore, Waterloo, Redfern, Newtown, Erskineville, Glebe etc. These cards are arranged alphabetically by street address and record the following (although not all details are recorded for each building): name of the building, street address, name of the architects, applicant and builder, development and building application file numbers, estimate of work, date of approval, date work started and completed. There are separate sections for the Royal Agricultural Society Showground and the University of Sydney.

The second group of cards is for proposed buildings in the outer city. These are usually for development applications and/or building applications that were approved but were never carried out, and development applications and/or building applications that were refused by Council.

The third group of cards contains a set of cards for completed inner city buildings that are arranged by year of completion, dating from 1954 to 1983.

The fourth group are for plans of government buildings in progress, and the fifth group for lapsed plans.

All of the above are contained in Boxes 1 and 2.

Box 3 contains charting cards used to update CRS 801, City Building Surveyor's Detail Sheets. These are arranged by the map number, from map 1 to 27. The information recorded is street address, description of amendments to be made (eg delete building, add street numbers, additions to the rear, rename building), date of Council resolution, and related file number.

This box also contains cards dealing specifically with parking stations, parks, Council property, road proposals, and building restrictions.

The parking station cards record the street address, name of licensee, maximum number of vehicles, date of the original license, and related file numbers. The parks cards record the location of the park, playground or rest area, dates of relevant resolutions of Council, related file numbers, name of the owner of the land, name of the park, and a notes column that records details such as whether the land was purchased, leased, etc. Each park was given a number and the cards are arranged numerically by that number, rather than alphabetically by address.

The Council Property cards contain information about Council buildings, laneways, streets, and record the locality, date of the relevant Council resolution, Town Clerk's file number and deed packet number, and particulars, such as sold for overdue rates, proposed purchase for housing, acquisition for road widening etc. Each property was given a number and that cards are arranged numerically by that number.

The Road Proposals cards deal mostly with splays connected to development applications and record the date, location, Council resolution, related file numbers and a brief description of the splay. They are arranged in chronological order.

The Building Restrictions and Covenants cards record height limitations, fixed building lines, whether other authorities need to contacted, etc. The cards record the locality, date of Council resolution, file numbers, and particulars. They are arranged alphabetically by street address.
