The registers record how Council acquired pieces of land or roadways, including the site of the Town Hall, various markets, and reserves. Most of the entries relate to acquisition for splays. The registers also record when Council lost property, for example when land was transferred to South Sydney Municipal Council or Leichhardt Municipal Council in 1968.

The registers record the location; how it was acquired (resumption, purchase, gift, taken for overdue rates, dedication, or re-alignment); from whom it was acquired; date acquired; the related papers in Town Clerk's Correspondence Files (AS_0034), City Engineer's Correspondence Files (AS-0144), and Central Activity Files (AS-0116); the claim number in Resumption Claim Packets (AS-0063); the deed packet number in Deed Packets (AS-0050), 1846-1988, and file number on South Sydney General Correspondence and Subject Files, 1989 - 2003 (AS-1045); title details (volume/folio/book); date of instrument; catalogued number of engineering plan; and remarks.

The remarks column is used to record information such as sale price, use of land, and amount of legal fees paid. The entries are often accompanied by coloured sketches of the area acquired. This sketches record survey measurements, street names, building or owner's names; annotations such as "old Post Office site", certificate of title number; and the existence of rights of way.

It is not clear when the registers began. The volumes are labelled "City Engineer's Dept", so it could be in 1936 when CA 5, City Engineer's Department I, was created. Book 1 has contents ranging from 1846 to 1991, Book 2 from 1869 to 1991.

Each book has an alphabetical index by address at the front. Book 1 contains pages 1 to 250, Book 2 pages 251 to 445.

The entries for each piece of land or roadway are not usually in chronological order on the page. It is likely that as a new piece of information was discovered it was added to the registers.

In 1949, when the City acquired Paddington, Waterloo, Alexandria, Redfern, Erskineville, Glebe, Newtown, and Darlington, summary sections were prepared showing how land in these areas had been acquired.

The registers were microfilmed in 1982, but entries continued to be made in the volumes. The registers were taken to South Sydney City Council's offices when that Council was created in 1989, where entries continued to be made. The original volumes were finally transferred to the City of Sydney Archives, by South Sydney City Council, in 2003.
