South Sydney City Council City Engineer's Department
Unique IDAG-0046DescriptionThe City Engineer's Department, one of the six departmental bodies organised under the Council of the City of South Sydney, was created by virtue of the City of Sydney Act 1988 which was proclaimed on 2 December 1988. The Act took effect on 1 January 1989. The operation of the department is based on the organisational structure adopted during the Special Meeting of the Council of the City of South Sydney held 3 January 1989.
Under the implementing schedule of the Act, the department inherited the engineering functions of the City of Sydney, except the duties to carry out contract supervision, review engineering aspects (structures, parking, road permits, etc.) of development and building applications for projects located within the boundaries of the City of Sydney.
Under the cross-servicing arrangements laid down in schedules to the Act, the Department took responsibility for road construction and reconstruction, including maintenance works, for both Sydney City Council and South Sydney City Council. It operates through its four branches, namely:
Design Branch takes charge of survey, structural, lighting, traffic, roads and drainage and system engineering requirements of the department.
Operations Branch handles overall supervision of works operation, workforce and trade, plant and motor vehicles.
Contract Branch undertakes contract supervision for all projects of the department.
Administration Branch provides engineering information investigation, issues permits, hoarding and cost control, and secretarial support.
When the cross servicing arrangement between CA 12, South Sydney City Council and CA 100 Sydney City Council ended during 1993, the engineering services provided by CA 46, South Sydney City Engineer's Department were transferred to CA 137, Urban Services Division, 1993+
