Unique IDAS-1145Start dateBetween 13th August 1953 and 29th October 1959Start date qualifiercircaFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionThe Circular Quay Supervisory Committee (1939 – 1964) first known as the Circular Quay Engineering Committee (1938 – 1939) was formed by a NSW cabinet decision 15 October, 1938 to oversee the development of infrastructure works around the Circular Quay (1). This Series is the minutes of this Committee. The minutes extant is from the period of the building of the Cahill Expressway and these minutes are most likely the original copies of the Chief Engineer/s at the City Council.

The Committee reported to the Minister of Transport and the Minister for Works and Local Government. The Committee members, who were all engineers, were representatives drawn from the major State and Local Agencies involved in carrying out public works around Circular Quay. All committee members reported at each meeting on progress of projects performed by their Agency and financial matters were often discussed. Some of the Committee members included:

E.O.K. Green – Chairman of Committee (date unknown - 18/07/1957), Principal Engineer, Harbours and Rivers
N.C. Vogan – Chairman of Committee (15/08/1957 - date unknown), Surveyor Chief Civil Engineers, Department of Railways
Mr. Terry – Department of Government Transport
J.G. Kilby – Civil Engineer, Department of Government Transport
Mr. Spencer – Department of Government Transport
Mr. Woellner – Acted as Secretary, Department of Local Government
C.R. Bickford – Engineer-in-Chief, Maritime Services Board
Colonel A.H. Garnsey – Chief Engineer of the City of Sydney Council until 1953
R.D. Stevenson - Chief Engineer of the City of Sydney Council, replaced Garnsey from 1954
Mr. Francis - Acting Deputy City Engineer of the City of Sydney Council

The projects discussed included development of the railway, ferry wharves, bus terminals and then later, managing of infrastructure around the building of the Cahill Expressway. Some of the public works included: resumption of land (for instance the resumption of Little Essex St for the Cahill Expressway); demolition of buildings; lighting plans; the designing of pedestrian crossings; building of bridges over Macquarie St, Harrington St and York St; ventilation of spiral roadway for the Cahill Expressway; and the arrangements for the opening ceremony of the Expressway.

Meetings seemed to have been held at various venues. The minutes are bound in one volume titled 'Circular Quay Replanning.' The minutes are typed and include some hand written annotations.
