Following Federation in 1901, when military operations became a federal responsibility, there was a prolonged debate about the battery’s ownership. The military moved out in 1908. This photograph shows the circular gun emplacement with five cannons mounted in carriages. Circular cuttings in the bedrock allowed the cannon to swivel.
