Edward Gallagher is the Agent for a shop on the South Head Road near Bourke Street occupied by Mr. Jones. On receiving the City Rates notice for £3 18s a month ago Jones presented it to Gallagher the owner being away from the Colony. The Agent refused to pay as Jones is in arrears with his rent. A Bailiff called on Jones with a Warrant for payment, and was referred to Gallagher, who suggested the Warrant be served on Jones. It wasn't done and Jones removed himself without paying his back rents or the Tax. On visiting the Town Hall to pay the Tax, Gallagher was informed he couldn't as the matter was in the hands of the Bailiff. A report for the City Treasurer's Office states the fact that there were insufficient goods in the shop to pay the arrears.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
