(Note: 10/1/91 Ack. For Mr Speers immediate report: JHD;10/1/91. Re callling on Mrs Hagon "Cardigan" 10 Billyard Avenue for City Rate No 25734. I called at the house and asked who was the Agent or Owner of the house, as I had come from the Town Hall concerning the City Rate. She told me that Mr Hagon had to pay the rate and that it had been paid. I told her I did not think so, as there was a warrant issued to collect it. She then said it was paid and that she would shew me the receipt and I told her I would be obliged if she would. She asked me to step into the house, which I did, and she then shewed me the receipt. I saw that there had been a mistake in the Rate No. and apologised to her for calling. I came away after taking particulars of the receipt. I went back and asked her to kindly let me look at the receipt again to see who had received the rate. I told her I was very sorry there had been a mistake, and the lady answered it is not the first time there has been a mistake: H Morris Asst Bailiff;12/1/91. I would like a report from Mr Speer as to the general behaviour of Mr Morris and his opinion as to his general credibility etc. This is a serious charge & the two accounts differ greatly: HJD;12/1/91; followed by Memo signed AJS Acting City Treasurer with a note dated 13/1/91 signed RH Reuben Chief Bailiff with glowing reference for Mr Morris) LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
