(Note: With reference to Mr Bee's letter complaining of the dustmen having refused to remove the rubbish left on the ground from an old oven recently pulled down and replaced by a new one, also some weeds left there (No 108 Forbes Street) by a former tenant, and requesting information as to what is to be done with the aforesaid rubbish, and what the Corporation men are supposed to remove, etc., etc. I have the honor respectfully to inform you that the men are fully justified in refusing to take away such rubbish, their duties being to remove mere house refuse viz. ashes, kitchen garbage and house sweepings; any thing beyond these must be removed by the owner or occupant of the premises, which can be done without difficulty and at very little expense, by carters who obtain a living by such like work. The time of removal of house refuse in the street mentioned is on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays between 9am and 2pm. With reference to the alleged neglect and carelessness of the men by non-removal of refuse of one side of the street, and by throwing the receptacles which had contained the rubbish into a heap, the Ganger emphatically denies the allegation. The usual course being to empty the receptacles into the dustcart and replace them where found, but if the refuse is placed at the kerbstone on any day after the carts have visited the street, the householder who places it there is responsible for the consequences, and not the Corporation employes: RS;7/6/93) LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
