Municipal Markets, Haymarket
This collection contains a small selection of archives relating to the Municipal Markets, a complex of market buildings constructed by the City Council in Haymarket, Sydney.
The Municipal Markets were designed by Architect and City Building Surveyor Robert Brodrick and James Merriman, Architect and Chief Draftsman. The series of market buildings, including vegetable, fruit, poultry and fish markets as well as cold storage works, were constructed between 1909 and 1912. They were the source of all the fresh produce in the city.
Vegetable markets
The Vegetable Market No 1 was officially opened by Lord Mayor Allen Taylor on 16 November 1909. The market provided accommodation for about 310 carts with horses and a similar number of stalls on benches. Paddy’s Markets also shifted across to the new market site from the Belmore Markets. The building is now known as Market City.
The Sydney Farm Produce Market Authority (generally known as the Sydney Market Authority) was created by the state government in 1968 to take over from the council the function of controlling the Vegetable Markets. The new market buildings at Flemington were completed in 1975 and all the wholesale fruit and vegetable markets shifted out there. The Vegetable Market No 1 site was redeveloped by the state government in the 1990s with a commercial and residential tower above it. Paddy’s Markets continues to trade in the original Vegetable Market No 1, with a small corner dedicated to agents selling fruit and vegetables. Some of the other market buildings in the area have also found new uses.
