Unique IDAG-0147DescriptionOn 16 August 1968, the Chief Commissioner of Sydney City Council, Vernon Treatt, and the Mayor of San Francisco, Joseph Alioto, gave verbal acceptance to the establishment of a Sister City relationship between the two cities. The relationship was fairly passive from 1971 until 1981 when it was reactivated as a result of a visit from a member of San Francisco's Sister City Committee. (CRS 116, Central Activity Files, File 34.15.0007).
As a result of this meeting, the Director of Parks and Civic Affairs, R Stringer, prepared a list of possible members for a Sydney/San Franciso Sister City Committee. This was approved by Lord Mayor Doug Sutherland on 13 May 1982.
The first meeting was held on 17 June 1982. Lord Mayor Sutherland was elected Chairman and executive services were provided by C J Stanmore, Civic Affairs Coordinator. The other members of the Committee included R L Dean, Australian American Association; W Wright, Art Gallery of NSW; P J Dunstan, Unilever Australia Pty Ltd; P Emery, Sydney Convention and Visitors Bureau; A Bevan, NSW Department of Education; I C Matheson, Westpac Banking Corporation; E Stevens, Foreign Affairs Department; K A Tyne, NSW Taxi Council; J R Ward, Qantas Airways Ltd; K Bannon, American Chamber of Commerce; and R D Stringer, Director of Parks and Civic Affairs, Sydney City Council.
The Committee deals with exchange visits, gifts (including gifts of koalas and kangaroos), fairs and social events, exhibitions, and trade between Sydney and San Francisco.
This Committee is still an active one and was described as one of Council's "special external committees" at a meeting on 15 June 1993.
