The index lists the subject matters, street matters and Council-owned properties in the series General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0087). (It has been superseded since all files in series AS-0087 are listed).

The stripdex contains two basic sections:
- Panels 1 to 5 refer to the streets within the boundaries of South Sydney Municipal Council. The streets are listed alphabetically and each street has been allocated a number between 1 and 452, Abercrombie Street being 1 and Zamia Street being 452.
- Panels 6 to 17 refer to general subject matters. Each subject was given a number, and the numbers range from 800 to 1111.

There are several exceptions to this basic arrangement. Following the list of street names, numbered 1 to 452, there is a small block of entries relating to street matters and housing commission developments in specifically named streets, numbered from 453 to 460.

The index offers quick access to the following series:
- Register of Street Matters in General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0106) files 2000-2452,
- Register of Traffic Matters in General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0107) (files 3000-3452), and
- General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0087).

In all three series, the streets have the same classification numbers allocated to them. In AS-0106, the numbers have the prefix '2' which indicates they are concerned with 'street matters', while in AS-0107 the numbers have the prefix '3' which indicates they are concerned with 'traffic matters'.
