The registers record the following information:
- date of registration of incoming mail
- file number (refers to files in South Sydney Municipal Council Correspondence Files AS-0087)
- date of the letter
- from whom
- subject
- who it was referred to, and
- a ‘follow up’ column used to record when the matter was completed etc. This column was not used after 1968.

The entries are all handwritten. It was the practice to remove the pages from the 2-post binder at the end of the year and replace with new pages for the new year. This means that only the register for 1981 is in a binder, the remaining loose pages were tied into bundles.

Once the correspondence had been registered as incoming mail, it was registered again, depending on whether it was correspondence relating to
- subject matters (files 800-1111)
- street matters (files 2000-2452), or
- traffic matters (files 3000-3452).

These registers are in:
- South Sydney Municipal Council Correspondence Files, Subject Register [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0105) 1968-1981
- Correspondence Files, Street Matters Register [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0106), 1968-1981, and
- Correspondence Files, Traffic Matters Register [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0107) 1968-1981.

The correspondence was indexed in a stripdex system by the subject matter or name of the street (AS-0104).

South Sydney Municipal Council was abolished and the area re-amalgamated with Sydney City Council from 1 January 1982. The records of South Sydney Municipal Council, including this correspondence register, were transferred to the Archives.
