Description
Unique IDAS-0087DateBetween 1st January 1949 and 31st December 1981Date qualifiercircaFormatRegistered FileShort descriptionThis series consists of five groups of files, each with their own number sequence within the series in the period 1949-1981. These groups of files relate to street properties, subject matters including administration, donations, industrial matters, Council owned properties and traffic matters. DescriptionThis series consists of five groups of files, each with their own number sequence within the series in the period 1949-1981. These groups of files are:
- 1 - 452: Street Properties A-Z.
- 1 - 460: Street Properties A-Z, separated files.
- 800 - 999: Subject Matters, e.g. administration, donations, industrial matters.
- 1000 - 1111: Council Owned Properties.
- 2000 - 2452: Street Matters A - Z, e.g., drainage, footpaths, construction and reconstruction.
- 3000 - 3452: Traffic Matters A - Z: individual street and property files.
The series was kept from 1968 by the Deputy Town Clerk’s Department [South Sydney Municipal Council] AG-0020 (01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981) but content commences in 1949.
The series was controlled by:
- Register of Traffic Matters in General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0107) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981
- Register of Subject Matters in General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0105) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981
- Register of Street Matters in General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0106) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981
- Stripdex Index to General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0104) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981
- Correspondence Register [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0090) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981.
The file numbers were allocated in blocks which were not always used. There are no files numbered 461-799, 1112-1999, 2453-2999.
The Street Property files (1 - 452) contain files relating to building construction alterations to private properties in each street within the South Sydney Municipality. Files are registered alphabetically by street name in a two-number classified system. Each street is given a primary number and files concerning specific properties on the street a secondary number, which is the street number of the property. For example, Abercrombie Street is given the primary number of 1, so a file dealing with 49 Abercrombie Street would be numbered 1/49.
The files contain correspondence, building applications and approvals, notices, resolutions of Council, commercial pamphlets, and copies of Committee papers.
The Subject Matter files (800-999) concern general matters which came before the system. Each subject was given a primary number and each new file raised concerning the subject a secondary number. For example, files concerning Legal Matters were numbered 899/1, 899/2, 899/3 etc. The files contain correspondence, pamphlets, notices, invitations, resolutions of Council and Committee reports.
The Council Owned Properties files (1000-1111) contain information relating to the hire and lease of Council owned properties such as Redfern Oval, and include correspondence, pamphlets, resolutions of Council and Committee reports. They are registered in a similar fashion to the Street Properties and Subject Matters files.
The Street Matters files (2000-2452) concern the construction and alteration of streets in the Municipality. Files are registered alphabetically by street in a two-number classified system in an identical manner to the Street Properties files. However, files for each street are given a (20) prefix to indicate a file is concerned with Street Matters (2000-2452). For example, Boundary Lane is registered as No 2044 in Street Matters, whereas in Street Properties Boundary Lane is registered as No 44.
The files concern drainage, footpaths, road resurfacing.
The Traffic Matters files (3000-3452) concern alterations to traffic conditions within the Municipality. Files are registered alphabetically by street in a two-number system identical to Street Properties and Street Matters files. Files concerning each registered are given a (30) prefix to indicate a file concerned only with traffic matters and not street properties (1-452) and street matters (2000-2452). Files contain correspondence, copies of Council resolutions and Committee reports.
Files in Town Clerk's Correspondence Files (AS-0034), relating to the new South Sydney area dating back to 1949, were transferred to South Sydney Council on its formation. These files were top-numbered into AS-0087. To locate top-numbered files consult the list attached to the series folders.
When South Sydney Municipal Council was amalgamated with Sydney City Council in 1982, those matters still active in AS-0087 were top-numbered into the series Central Activity Files (AS-0116).
