The series registers files with the classification numbers 800 - 1111. It was created by the Deputy Town Clerk's Department (AG-0020) at South Sydney Municipal Council in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981.

Each subject that is dealt with is recorded alphabetically and allocated a primary classification number. Each matter which is then raised pertaining to a subject is given a secondary classification number. For example, the subject of 'Street Appeals - Chocolate Wheels', has been given the primary classification number 824. 'Salvation Army Appeal', was the 9th matter raised pertaining to this subject, thus its secondary classification number is 9, and its file number in AS-0087 is 824/9.

There are some files which have more than two numbers allocated to them. This generally occurs when the contents of a file become too large to be continued in one folder, or there are several matters pertaining to one subject. For example, there are files relating to the Family Day Care Scheme which have been broken into a number of folders, with one folder containing staffing matters, and another matters referring to the scale of fees for the centre. In cases like this, files have the same primary and secondary classification number, and are allocated part numbers.

There are numerous anomalies in the system of alphabetical arrangement in the series. For example, 'Registration of Dogs' is recorded after 'Delegations of Power Authorities' and before 'Donations'. Such anomalies make AS-0105 difficult to use and understand, and a familiarity with Stripdex Index to General Correspondence Files [South Sydney Municipal Council] (AS-0104), will help to understand these anomalies.

Subject Matters are distinct from Street Matters and Traffic Matters in that they do not pertain to any specific street.
