Registers of Infectious Diseases, 1969-1976 [City of Sydney]
Description
Unique IDAS-0276DateBetween 2nd June 1969 and 12th August 1976Date qualifierexactFormatVolume - HardcoverDescriptionThis series of four volumes contained registers of notifiable infectious diseases under Part III Regulations of the Public Health Act 1896.
The Register was created by:
- City Health Department (AG-0073) in the period 30/05/1900 to 12/08/1976, and
- Health Officer (AG-0095) in the period 01/01/1896 to 03/05/1900.
The majority of notifications were made by registered medical practitioners at hospitals in the local area, including Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC), Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA), Prince Henry Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, Crown Street Women's Hospital and University of New South Wales Student Services.
The registers contained the following information set out in the Schedule B format
- date of report
- date of receipt of report
- name of legally qualified medical practitioner or other person reporting
- patient's name
- sex
- age
- address of premises at which patient or deceased person is
- disease
- milk supply
- school
- residence at date of attack
- health inspector visited and served notices (date)
- if a separate night soil service is provided
- premises disinfected
- any special matter requiring attention.
Under Regulation 16, Part III of the Act, gazetted June 15, 1899, when any local authority was notified of a case of infectious disease at a hospital within its district it was required to record the notification within the register and notify the local authority in which the attack took place. The final column ‘any special matter requiring attention’ contained details of the local council area where the attack took place and often included details of whether the council had been notified of the attack and the date it was notified.
Diseases notified included infantile diarrhorea, hepaptitis, e-coli, salmonella or gastro-enteritis, tuberculosis and malaria.
The series would have originally been kept from 1896 to 1976. The registers for the years prior to 1969 appear to have been destroyed, and they were not required to be kept after 1976.
Infectious diseases registers were held by other Councils that were amalgamated with the City including:
- Notification of Infectious Disease Register [Paddington Municipal Council] (AS-0581) [Paddington Municipal Council]
- Register of Notification of Infectious Diseases [Erskineville Municipal Council] (AS-0627)
- Register of Notification of Infectious Diseases [Redfern Municipal Council] (AS-1128).
