The information is computerised and this copy is a computer printout (VGP RT1) certified by the Valuer-General. The printouts are bound into volumes.

The series was created by the South Sydney Municipal Council Deputy Town Clerks Department (AG-0020). It was preceded by Valuation Lists (AS-00310).

The valuations were used by Council to establish the rating-base factor for each property by which the rate is determined. The valuation books were annotated by Council to record changes to the property, ownership etc - anything affecting the service of rate notices. The Valuer-General revalues all properties at irregular intervals (approximately every third year). In the intervals between, supplementary lists of valuations and individual valuations are supplied by the Valuer-General.

The entries include the following information:
- valuation number; owner's name and address
- owner code
- street number
- type of property
- the Registrar General's identifying data (volume, folio, DP)
- size
- unimproved and improved (only 1969) value, and
- date of valuation.
To this Council added
- any changes in ownership, property type
- Registrar General's data, and
- rating information (non-rateable, pensioner rates, arrears and files in South Sydney Municipal Council General Correspondence Files (AS-0087), relating to decisions on rating (all years).

The entries are in valuation number order arranged alphabetically (by street name) and numerically (within the streets, even numbers first, then in falling sequence (or uneven numbers).

The valuations in this series were printed in 1969, 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1980. In the first year of the new Council's operation, the 1963 Valuation Lists for the former Northcott Ward of Sydney City Council were used by the Rates Section for levying the rates. Consequently, the old assessment (or valuation) numbers from the City lists appear on the 1969 rate notices. There was a new, continuous sequence of assessment numbers in the October 1969 issue of valuations which appears on the left-hand side of the pages. The old numbers have been written on the right-hand side of the pages.

Supplementary valuations have been kept for the years 1970 to 1973, and 1978 to 1981. All supplementary entries for 1970 to 1973 have been annotated in the Valuer-General's Books.
