Regulation of produce, fish and livestock markets
Unique IDAY-0002Description*** This acitivity applies to the City of Sydney only ***
Management and administration of markets for the sale of produce (fruit and vegtables etc), fish, cattle and other livestock. From the 1880s the livestock markets were relocated to Flemington but continued to be the responsibility of the Council. It appears that the Council lost responsibility for livestock markets some years before the final transfer of all remaining markets management responsibilities to the State Government in 1968.
Other Councils were permitted by legislation to regulate (but not establish) markets, but this power does not seem to have been exercised by the Councils later absorbed by the City of Sydney. There was a fish market in Redfern.
The NSW State Government took control of fish marketing from the Sydney City Council in 1945
This activity also includes the appointment of a City Auctioneer (Samuel Payten) in 1867 and the granting of licences for individuals to auction "small livestock" (lambs, pigs, milch cows) on their property. This was only only within the City's boundaries, as one licence at least was granted for a property in Elswick St Leichhardt (CRS 22, Finance Committee reports).
When the Markets function was transferred to the State Government in 1968, most of the records were also handed over.CreationSydney Corporation Act 1842, ss71,72.
Empowered the Council to establish and administer markets.
Municipalities Act 1858 s72 gave Municipal Councils other than the City of Sydney power to regulate marketsAbolitionSydney Farm Produce Authority Marketing Act 1968
