The spire of Christ Church St Laurence dominates the skyline. The low building in the foreground was the Headquarters of the Civil Ambulance & Transport Brigade of NSW but was earlier a police watch house. There is an auction notice on the roof, announcing the sale of this 'valuable city block'. This single-storey building was replaced with Sydney’s tallest building in 1906, Marcus Clark & Co department store. In front, a policeman stands next to a small traffic island surmounted with a gas lamp and an ornate pole with tram wires attached, protected by four bollards. An electricity pole sits further back along George Street. Beyond the church is the prominently advertised funeral parlour of Wood and Co.
