Street, William ?, 68 Berwick Lane, James McGrath, Clarence Street and William McC?, 95 Campbell Street, Sydney to the Mayor complaining that some porters are given preferential treatment and that vanmen and carters are leaving their vehicles and acting as porters. Attached are two reports from the Inspector of Licensed Porters explaining the licensing system which from 1887 did give preference to older men on some wharves at the request of the Steamship Owners Association and also allotted license holders to certain wharves to avoid confusion. This was to get rid of young men of the larrikin class. John Silver has only recently been licensed as a porter and is a trouble maker. He refutes that cabmen would leave their vehicles as this is a breach of the By Laws and is a summonsable offence. Also attached is a report by P. Lynch, Assistant Inspector explaining his duties in relation to licensed porters and that as boats requiring attention arrive and depart at all times of the day and days of the week his hours of work have to match.LanguageEnglish (eng)Digitised recordYes
