The volumes were created by the following agencies:
- City Engineer and City Surveyors Department I (AG-0086) in the period 30/8/1883 to 31/12/1889
- City Surveyors Department (AG-0087) in the period 01/01/1890 to 20/01/1925
- City Engineer and City Surveyors Department II (AG-0088) in the period 20/01/1925 to 29/08/1928
- City Engineering and Building Surveyors Department (AG-0061) in the period 31/08/1928 to 01/06/1936
- City Engineers Department I (AG-0005) in the period 01/06/1936 to 31/12/1988
- South Sydney City Council City Engineers Department (AG-0046) in the period 01/01/1989 to 31/12/1991
- South Sydney City Council Public Works and Services Department (AG-0216) in the period 1/1/1992 to 21/6/1993.

All of the volumes were indexed, however these are incomplete, and the index cards in City Engineer's Miscellaneous Cards (AS-1115), provide the best access.

The information is of a diverse nature, but most of it is related to ownership and rights over land, roads, and footways in the City. In particular, the Miscellaneous Books were used to record the results of searches carried out by the Surveyors into the ownership status of parcels of land, laneways, roads and rights of way (Council was not responsible for cleaning and improvement works on private laneways). There are also many documents relating to street names, alignments, boundaries, street widenings, garbage disposal, urinals and conveniences, steps and stairs, parks, and subdivisions.

It is possible the Miscellaneous Books were created to assist in the preparation of the City Surveyor's Half Yearly Reports to Council, which began in July 1882 (see Series AS-0042, items A-000446310 and A-000446311). The first item is a copy of a letter dated 30 August 1883, but there are copies of reports dating backing to October 1810.
