The Committee was responsible for the control, regulation and planning of new public ways and subdivisions, the rearrangement of existing public ways and parcels of land, and the improvement and embellishment of the City.DescriptionThis series consists of the minutes of the meetings of City Planning and Improvements Committee (AG-0122) in the period 08/07/1936 TO 07/10/1969 and City Development Committee (AG-0099) in the period 07/10/1069 TO 10/12/1973.

The committee was responsible for the control, regulation and planning of new public ways and subdivisions, the rearrangement of existing public ways and parcels of land, and the improvement and embellishment of the City.

This included: tree planting, street widening and extension, the acquisition of land and property for parks and street improvements, traffic management, declaration of residential areas, splays, subdivisions, measures to relieve traffic congestion, preparation of plans for the City, municipal boundary alterations, a copy of the Report of the Circular Quay Planning Committee, appointed to advise the Government generally as to the most suitable treatment of the Circular Quay Area (1937), re-modelling of sub-standard housing, post-War planning and rebuilding, construction of a pedestrian subway under Elizabeth St to Central Railway Station, parking proposals, creation of a Town Planning Branch in the City Engineer's Department, a planning scheme for the County of Cumberland; traffic and parking problems, parking regulation, representations to Council relating to the proposed zoning under City of Sydney Planning Scheme, the proposed Height of Buildings Act, interim development application approval, redevelopment of Woolloomooloo as a residential area, objections by aldermen to the City of Sydney Planning Scheme as amended by the Minister for Local Government, the creation of a civic square in Martin Place, acquisition of property for erection of Council parking station, re-modelling of Railway Square, the City of Sydney Strategic Plan and Action Plans, street furniture and low cost streetscape improvements (14 Dec 1970), preservation of historic buildings, the City of Sydney Architectural Award and residential street closures.

The index to each bound volume is alphabetically handwritten while the text of the minutes are typescript. Volume 7 (A-00432785) has a note indicating that some minutes are missing after they were required by Court and not returned to Council. Some minutes are pasted on the pages of the bound volumes, particularly for volume 8 (A-00432786). All the minutes have been signed by the chairman of the committee except the minutes between 1966 and 1973.

It is not known what happened to the Minutes of the Committee from 1974 to when the committee ended on 10 October 1977.
