The series was controlled by the South Sydney Municipal Council Deed Packet Register (AS-0100) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981 and the Sydney Municipal Council Deed Packet Index (AS-0083) in the period 01/08/1968 to 31/12/1981.

The papers are housed in manilla packets referred to as deed packets.

Sydney City Council has deed packets in series AS-0050 dating back to 1838. In 1949, there was a major reorganisation of local government boundaries. The Municipal Councils of Redfern, Waterloo, Alexandria, Darlington, Erskineville, Newtown, Glebe and Paddington were amalgamated with Sydney City Council, and the legal documents of those Councils, which were still in force, were incorporated into AS-0050.

In 1968 there was another reorganisation of Council's boundaries, which resulted in the establishment of Northcott Municipal Council (and the redistribution of certain areas from the City Council's area to Woollahra, Leichhardt and Marrickville Municipal Councils). Northcott Council (later renamed South Sydney Municipal Council), took in the suburbs of Redfern, Waterloo, Darlington, Alexandria, Newtown, and Erskineville.

A large number of deed packets relating to Northcott Council's area, dating back to 1949, were removed from AS-0050 and transferred to Northcott Council. These deed packets were registered into a new series and top-numbered, becoming part of this series, AS-0082. These new numbers were written on the front of the deed packet and circled in ink. Numbers 1- 660, and 662-674 of AS-0082 fall into this category. Deed packet numbers 661, and 675-926, were all created by South Sydney Municipal Council.

The deed packets are indexed alphabetically by address in South Sydney Municipal Council Deed Packet Index (AS-0083) 1968-1981, and registered in Register of South Sydney Municipal Council Deed Packets (AS-0100) 1968-1981.

South Sydney Municipal Council was abolished and the area reamalgamated with Sydney City Council from 1 January 1982. The records of South Sydney Municipal Council, including the deed packets in AS-0082, were transferred to the Archives.
